Like Candidate, Like Adviser

John McCain economic adviser Phil Gramm, as reported by The Washington Times on July 9, 2008:

You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession.... We have sort of become a nation of whiners.

John McCain answering a question on April 4, 2006 before the AFL-CIO’s Building and Construction Trades Department:

McCain responded by saying immigrants were taking jobs nobody else wanted. He offered anybody in the crowd $50 an hour to pick lettuce in Arizona.
Shouts of protest rose from the crowd, with some accepting McCain’s job offer.
“I’ll take it!” one man shouted.
McCain insisted none of them would do such menial labor for a complete season. “You can’t do it, my friends.”
Some in the crowd said they didn’t appreciate McCain questioning their work ethic.

So Americans are always whining and too lazy to work for $50 an hour. To paraphrase what Jeane Kirkpatrick once claimed of Democrats: Why do Republicans always blame Americans first?
