Justice Samuel Alito’s wife, Martha-Ann, once again unwitting made herself the internet’s Main Character on Tuesday after an undercover reporter released a secretly recorded conversation in which she nastily complained about her neighbor’s Pride flag and bizarrely declared “I’m German.”

 “Look at me. I’m German, from Germany. My heritage is German,” she told a documentary maker who was posing as a conservative activist. “You come after me, I’m going to give it back to you. And there will be a way—it doesn’t have to be now—but there will be a way they will know. Don’t worry about it.”

It was a single soundbite among a conversation full of flat-out MAGA-fueled weirdness from Martha-Ann....

MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell asked "What cold Samuel Alito's wife possibly mean when invoking Germany and being German to inspire fear in the people who in her mind, at least, come after her?" He began answering his own question with "many peoples of the world have much to be ashamed of- non more than Germany and Germans. Mrs. Alito sounds proud of being German."

 

An article entitled "Other Nations Could Learn From Germany's Efforts to reconcile after World War II" appeared in 2015 in Johns Hopkins Magazine. Greg Rienzi drew heavily on the work of Lily Gardner Feldman. The British-born Feldman grew up in London "yet spent several formative years living and working in Germany" and recently had written Germany's foreign Policy of Reconciliation: From Enmity to Amity. Rienzi explained

On September 10, 1952 a reparations agreement between Israel and West Germany was signed in Luxembourg. The first reparations payment to the Israeli state as goods in kind began in 1953 and ended in 1965; payments to individuals continue to this day. By the end of 2008, Germany had provided 66 billion euros in all forms of compensation, with the largest share going to Israel....

Germany's ongoing relationship with Israel is unique, Gardner Feldman says, but one can see similar reconciliatory themes, approaches, and patterns through Germany's relations with its other former enemies. In her book, she argues that the "cornerstone, perhaps the very definition, of German foreign policy after World War II became, progressively, reconciliation." Germany had to reconcile with the countries and people it had attacked, occupied, and slaughtered during a brutal six years of war and destruction. Gardner Feldman examined all German chancellors from Adenauer to Merkel and found a common strain: an imperative to repay a deep moral debt.

O'Donnell displayed an image of a series of Nazi-era German banners and added of Mrs. Alito

She's also proud of flying flags and here's the flag that was used to express that specific pride, the pride of being German beginning in the 1930s. Is the fear that flag created around the world the fear that Mrs. Alito wants to create in her threatening use of her heritage? Look at me, look at me. I'm German, I'm German. My heritage is German.

That may be the case. However, Alito instead may have been projecting what she believes is a (positive) stereotype of Germans and German-Americans as prone to retaliation and in general as a people not to be messed with. However, in my experience, the common pejorative was "domineering" but my heritage isn't German, so there is that.

O'Donnell continued

O.K., Mrs. Alito. Tell us more about your family. What did they do during the war? I mean, your relatives who were still in Germany living under and perhaps like most Germans, supporting Adolf Hitler and everything he did. Tell us more.

It certainly would be interesting while not particularly important because it was approximately 80 years ago, sins of the father and so forth. More interesting-and significant:

More importantly, Martha-Ann Alito isn't German. She's an American. From Kentucky. From a portion of the country the right likes to refer to as the "real America" or "America."

Once calling a work colleague "Polish," I was reprimanded by being told "I'm an American." More specifically, the colleague could have added "a Polish-American." And yet, decades later the wife of a United States Supreme Court Justice has told documentary filmmaker Lauren Windsor "I'm German, from Germany. My heritage is German..." Her heritage presumably is German but she is an American. 

She is an American, unquestionably. However, whether she is happy about that, aside from her husband having a coveted, well-paid job with lifetime security and no accountability, is far more dubious. Flying an American flag upside down in support of an insurrection against the federal government is a pretty good clue. Martha-Ann Alito is a German-American and American but the America she longs for is one our Founding Fathers would not recognize.

As most- not enough- Americans know from the report by The Atlantic's editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg in September 2022

When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, near Paris, in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true.

Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed. 

Trump- or as CNN's Jake Tapper would put it- "President Trump" states

They make up stories- disinformation. A story like that. Think o fit from a practical standpoint. I'm standing there with generals and military people. In a cemetery. And I look at them and say "these people are suckers and losers."

Now, think of it. Unless you're a psycho or a crazy person or a very stupid person, who would say that , anyway? But who would say it to military people with military- because as President of the United States, I would say if I made that statement- if I have generals here, if I have it-- I would imagine that most of them would end up in a major fist fight with the President, O.K.? And you know what I would have said? It was O.K. in that instance. They made up a story- just out of thin air like a lot of the fake stories that are made up by these people because they're among the most dishonest people in the country- the fake news, they're dishonest people.

Kelly left the Administration in December of 2020 after serving as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and Chief of Staff to President Trump, approximately 20 months before General John Kelly revealed the information Goldberg reported. 

Of course, there is little to no chance that The Atlantic "made up the story- just out of thin air," and "little chance" is on its way out of town. It is possible that Kelly made up the comments he attributed to President Trump but the latter lacks half the courage to point his figure at a retired general.

And it's improbable that Kelly fabricated his account. Thirteen months after the Atlantic report, he would remark to CNN of Trump 

A person that thinks those who defend their country in uniform, or are shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or spend years being tortured as POWs are all ‘suckers’ because ‘there is nothing in it for them, A person that did not want to be seen in the presence of military amputees because ‘it doesn’t look good for me.’ A person who demonstrated open contempt for a Gold Star family — for all Gold Star families — on TV during the 2016 campaign, and rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America’s defense are ‘losers’ and wouldn’t visit their graves in France.

A person who is not truthful regarding his position on the protection of unborn life, on women, on minorities, on evangelical Christians, on Jews, on working men and women. A person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about. A person who cavalierly suggests that a selfless warrior who has served his country for 40 years in peacetime and war should lose his life for treason – in expectation that someone will take action. A person who admires autocrats and murderous dictators. A person that has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our Constitution, and the rule of law.

There is nothing more that can be said. God help us.

This guy was a United States General with reverence for the office of the Presidency, whose occupant is Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces when called into battle. He is also a conservative and would not have criticized the Republican President unless the latter showed serious contempt for members of those Armed Forces.

Trump knew that- and knew that General Kelly was unlikely to repeat the President's remarks and, if he did, would do so in a fashion that wouldn't hurt Trump and help the Democrats. 

One commenter to Filipkowski's post wisely asks "Shouldn't John Kelly find some bravery in Miles Taylor and Olivia Troye going on camera? What's it going to take? Yet, for every Taylor and Troye, there are dozens more like Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Lindsay Graham, J.D. Vance, and the other Republicans who once criticized Donald Trump and now are slavishly devoted to him or nearly so. 

Donald Trump put his chips down on a bet that it's going to take more than the likelihood of electing a President who has threatened to wipe out the Constitution to convince General Kelly to put his prestige on the line. Think of Anthony Fauci, who before the last presidential election kept his mouth shut about the dangers of Donald Trump, betting the latter would lose the office. Fauci won that gamble and Kelly, God help us, may be making the same calculation.

The Open Minds Which Are Not So Open-Minded

Left-leaning and libertarian- leaning libertine Bill Maher and right-wing libertarian Matt Walsh agree that Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are singularly open-minded people. Beginning at 3:18 of the Overtime segment of Real Time with Bill Maher, the host remarks

But going to San Francisco- not exactly what you think should be his best hunting ground and sent to the Bronx, the South Bronx, and I don't think even Obama went there, maybe he did once. I think the last Democrat was Clinton or Carter or something. I mean, he goes- that's what the Republicans do- go where you wouldn't expect them to go. They come here, you know, they're not afraid, they're not afraid to take their message to the people who don't agree with them right off the bat.

Trump cares so much for his supporters that, prior to the Iowa primary, he urged them to vote even if "sick as a dog" and it would kill them. However, he did go to the South Bronx, heavily black and especially Latino, though news reports do not indicate that he brought them the "laziness is a trait in blacks" and immigrants "are poisoning the blood of our country" message. A mere oversight, I'm sure. Walsh concurs, commenting

I mean, it's one of the things that's always puzzled me about those who claim to be defending democracy all the time and I know they often are, think that they are. Actual democracy is going out everywhere and trying to get peoples' votes. And populists, left or right, tend to be very good at that. Bernie Sanders is going everywhere, too. He's a left-wing populist but he will go on Fox News or whatever and Trump will do that, too.

Walsh cleverly implies that Donald Trump, who as recently as 18 months ago called called for the "termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution," believes in democracy because he campaigns broadly for votes. 

Also, for what seems to be the 3,712th time, Donald Trump is referred to as a "populist." The guy asks individual donors for checks of $25 million or $50 million, totaling a billion dollars, while promising them tax cuts and termination of environmental regulations is to populism as Benjamin Netanyahu is to Islam.

As even a stopped clock is right twice a day, even Matt Walsh can say something valid, and Senator Sanders did in fact appear at least twice on Fox News, most notably for town hall events in the 2020 election cycle. Credit is due him for recognizing what most Democratic candidates did not, that there may have been no presidential candidate (or president) since George Herbert Walker Bush in 1992 to show his or her stuff at a town hall event and not come out shining.

Yet, the same interest Sanders demonstrated by appearing on a right-wing cable news network appears to be lacking when he has the opportunity to do what a Senator should be doing. Owen Lavine of The Daily Beast reports reports

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) slammed Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the group of bipartisan congressional leaders who invited the embattled leader to address a joint-session of Congress, in a statement released by the senator on Saturday.

“It is a very sad day for our country that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been invited—by leaders of both parties—to address a joint meeting of the United States Congress,” Sanders opened the letter. “I certainly will not attend.”

Sanders lambasted the decision, referring to Netanyahu as a “war criminal” responsible for “clear and outrageous violations of international law.” Sanders similarly supported the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants for Netanyahu and other top Israeli and Hamas officials.

The senator qualified that he supported Israel’s right to defend itself following the October 7 attack, but not Israeli violations of international law.

“Israel does not have the right to kill more than 34,000 civilians and wound over 80,000,” Sanders added.

Prime Minister Netanyahu is expected to address Congress within the coming weeks or after the August recess.

Bernie Sanders could boycott a nation's leader he abhors. Or he could do what an open-minded United States Senator would do: sit through a speech given by an individual representing a loyal ally and demonstrate his disagreement with the message and: sit on his hands. Sanders chooses to call Netanyahu a "war criminal," which makes the Prime Minister's words particularly controversial, and significant.

He doesn't have to boo, though he's free to do so. Remaining seated while others around you are applauding would mean one less member of Congress showing support for Netanyahu. 

Of course, Sanders is free to sit at home or use the occasion in any way he wishes. But his refusal to listen to a leader who has traveled halfway across the world to make his argument undermines Matt Walsh's adoration for a leftist Democrat who would appear on Fox News. So, too, is Donald Trump's willingness to go to the South Bronx an empty gesture for a guy never appears on MSNBC or CNN- and was too scared to join on stage in  debate his rivals for the Republican nomination for President. Walsh and Maher should curb their enthusiasm.

 

Mr. McGraw

The answer to "why does anyone care what Dr. Phil thinks about anything?" can be discerned by the antics of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, whose both malice and savviness are underappreciated.  When Greene's opportunity to question Dr. Anthony Fauci came around

 the Georgia Republican refused to call Fauci “doctor” and instead referred to him as “Mr. Fauci.”

 “Do you think that’s appropriate? Do the American people deserve to be abused like that, Mr. Fauci, because you’re not ‘Dr.,’ you’re ‘Mr. Fauci’ in my few minutes,” she said, before adding, “No, I don’t need your answer."

                      

"You're not 'Dr.', you're "Mr. Fauci'" asserted the congresswoman, who understands how to undermine the credibility of a witness she loathes (and how to raise campaign cash). 

Fauci is a real-life, educated doctor who was testifying before the House Oversight and Accountability Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic. (Say that three times fast.). Before retiring, he was head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and was public health spokesman for the federal government under President Trump and chief medical adviser for President Biden.

Whatever controversies pertain to Fauci, he arguably is singularly qualified to speak of Covid-19 and was doing so as an expert in immunology and public health. Thus, he was legitimately referred to as "Dr. Fauci." Nonetheless, failure to show enhanced respect is not a felony, nor is characterizing him as "Mr. Fauci."

Greene's motivation was both to vent her hatred to him and to erode his cache. As a "doctor," Fauci is owed respect and the benefit of the doubt in his area of expertise. As "Mr.," he's merely the guy down the street, at the home improvement store on a Saturday morning, or at the end of the bar who always has an opinion about everything,. Think Cheers' Cliff Clavin without the postal uniform.

And yet, when it comes to Dr. Phil McGraw, tweeters on the left, as well as virtually everyone else, refers to the bloviator as "Dr. Phil,"  whatever he's opining about.  A trained psychologist and Biden hater, McGraw has no special knowledge of legal, political or cultural matters. In those contexts, he is best referred to as "Mr. McGraw" or "Phil," though he'd undoubtedly prefer the latter. 

Worse yet, McGraw has come to be known less as "Dr. McGraw" than as "Dr. Phil," a double gift. He is accorded not only the honorific of "Dr.," but the easy familiarity of "Phil." We're expected not only to respect the doctor but like him personally as the good friend Phil.

As with Anthony Fauci or anyone else, "Mr." is not an insult.  But in contrast to Dr. Fauci, Dr. McGraw does not confine his opinions to an area of his expertise. He has no particular insight into the Biden presidency or a future Trump presidency, which he would like to see. Whenever he speaks of matters outside of psychology, he should not be referred to as "Dr. Phil," an appellation he has not earned and does not deserve.

In the days since Donald Trump was convicted of 34 felonies in his criminal hush money trial, Republicans who view the case as politically motivated have coalesced around a new rallying cry: Prosecute the left.

Candidates, officeholders and members of the former president’s family have amplified Trump’s calls for retribution against political enemies and urged their fellow Republicans to start charging Democrats with crimes.

“Time for Red State AGs and DAs to get busy,” Rep. Mike Collins of Georgia wrote on the social platform X, formerly Twitter, after a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty.

Influential conservative activist Charlie Kirk urged Republican prosecutors to get “creative” in bringing charges: “Indict the left, or lose America,” he said on X.

On a slightly positive note, he is someone on the extreme far-right who does not believe America is already lost, though prosecuting individuals because of their political registration is a hallmark of totalitarianism. Moreover

In a podcast interview, Trump’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., said, “We have to fight fire with fire.”

And the former president on Tuesday suggested he might try to retaliate against Hillary Clinton, his 2016 opponent, if he returns to the White House.

We learn that the ex-President never legitimately passed 6th grade English when he remarks

“Wouldn’t it be terrible to throw the president’s wife and the former secretary of state, think of it, the former secretary of state, but the president’s wife, into jail? Wouldn’t that be a terrible thing? But they want to do it,” Trump said in an interview on Newsmax. “It’s a terrible, terrible path that they’re leading us to. And it’s very possible that it’s going to have to happen to them.”

The President's wife and the former Secretary of State? Leave Jill Biden out of this. Presumably, this is only bad grammar and Trump is referring solely to one person, Hillary Clinton. AP continues

The calls to weaponize the judicial system against Democrats are a degree more intense than some other suggestions for retaliation that Republicans have made since the guilty verdict, such as calls to investigate the prosecutors in the Manhattan case or for voters to give their own verdict by sending Trump back to the White House in November.

Since the guilty verdict? Reference to the guilty verdict is only the talking point. This has been going on for years- perhaps not by the entire party bleating in lockstep but by the undisputed, White Jesus, leader of the GOP.

analyzed over 13,000 of Trump’s Truth Social posts from January 1, 2023 to April 1, 2024, and found that while Trump has recently backed off some of his more violent rhetoric, threatening political opponents has been a consistent fixation for Trump. Since the start of last year, Trump has issued direct or implied threats on Truth Social to use the powers of the federal government to target Joe Biden during a second Trump administration 25 times. Specifically, Trump has threatened him with FBI raids, investigations, indictments and even jail time.

Recall that

Trump has called for additional prosecutions on the false basis he won the 2020 election. In February 2023 he wrote on Truth Social, commenting on an article about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg violating Georgia election law, “He cheated on the Election(s). The whole system is RIGGED. Why isn’t he being prosecuted? The Democrats only know how to cheat. America isn’t going to take it much longer!” Last October, Trump ReTruthed a meme showing two election workers that was captioned, “start arresting the poll workers and watch how fast they tell you who told them to cheat.”

In addition to these threats against other high-profile public figures, Trump has also threatened nonprofits for their work. In November he wrote on Truth Social, “For any radical left charity, non-profit, or so called aid organizations supporting these caravans and illegal aliens, we will prosecute them for their participation in human trafficking, child smuggling, and every other crime we can find.”

This is not a threat of retaliation or revenge for the prosecution Trump is facing. Rather, it is Donald Trump's modus operandi. As noted by AP, a disciple undoubtedly speaking for others:

In a post on X, Republican House candidate Brandon Gill of Texas lamented what he viewed as “raw power” rather than an “equally applied legal system” in the charges being brought against Trump: “Might makes right,” he said. “Republicans must wake up to the new reality and respond accordingly.”

"Might makes right" is the G.O.P. governing principle. Republicans are not threatening prosecution (and persecution) of Democrats and other political opponents merely because of Alvin Bragg, Fani Willis, Jack Smith, and others defending the rule of law. The peril democracy faces is not primarily if Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are defeated in November. However, if they prevail, the rule of law will be shredded while critics of the regime are arrested, and much of the media will pretend to believe it would never have occurred had Democrats not been so mean to Donald Trump.

Serving Her Lord and Savior

During her rant below, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (emphasis hers) tells a reporter

Excuse me. Let me correct you and this is really important. I don't worship- I worship God. God- and Jesus is my savior. I don't worship President Trump and I'm really sick and tired of the bullshit antics I have to deal with constantly from the Democrats. So that's what we just went through in there. And then they're sitting there. They can't attack my character all day long. What's his face in there- whoever was talking last- was calling me insane but yet we can't say "oh, they're attacking my character."

How soon (over the course of maybe 62 days maybe 62 days) they forget.  

On April 2, 2024, Representative Greene stood outside of New York County Supreme Court to exalt Donald Trump soon before he was to be arraigned. by Judge Juan Merchan. She told Right Side Broadcasting host (also boyfriend) Brian Glenn "Trump is joining some of the most incredible people in history being arrested today. Nelson Mandela was arrested, served time in prison. Jesus- Jesus was arrested and murdered by the Roman government."

It's possible that Marjorie Taylor Greene, despite her protestation to the country, is no admirer of Jesus Christ- and of Nelson Mandela, though that's less likely. More likely, she does like Jesus, in which case "I don't worship President Trump" is a brazen lie. And as Jesus is quoted as saying 

One way to demonstrate that she does not worship Donald Trump is to acknowledge that the latter is not "President Trump." (The media should correct or at least question Republicans who refer to Trump in the present tense as "the President" or "President Trump" but miracles are uncommon.) Of course, she won't do that because she does worship Donald Trump, referring to him as "President Trump," not because she's intimidated by him but because she deeply admires him.

She's not alone. There no longer are MAGA Republicans and "moderate Republicans." There are only Republicans who are afraid of a Trump-endorsed candidate opposing them, and Republicans who are all in on what they believe he is doing for their party. Unless she's an even better actor than her savior Donald Trump, Representative Greene is in the latter category. 

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus is quoted as maintaining "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

Nor can one serve both God and Donald J. Trump. She can claim otherwise but Marjorie Taylor Greene has made her choice and it's not the one described in the Old and New Testaments.

Recognizing Donald Trump

She knew.

After Donald Trump was convicted in New York City, NY on Thursday on all 34 counts of business fraud, he told told reporters "this was a rigged, disgraceful trial. The next day, he gave a speech declaring of the court "they are in total conjunction with the White House and the DOJ. Just so you understand, this is all done by Biden and his people."

In September of 2007, Mrs. Clinton unveiled a health care plan, more progressive than the Affordable Care Act later implemented by President Obama, which would have provided universal coverage for Americans.  In August of 2016, responding to the Zika virus prevalent in Miami, As she described it, Clinton proposed

a Public Health Rapid Response Fund, with consistent, year-to-year budgets, to better enable the CDC, HHS, FEMA, state and local public health departments, hospital systems, and other federal agencies to quickly and aggressively respond to major public health crises and pandemics. I will also ensure that our government has strong leadership and is organized to better support and work with people on the ground facing public health challenges....

In addition, we need to do more to boost our preparedness for biological threats and bioweapons; to support research for new diagnostic tests, therapeutic treatments, and vaccines for emerging diseases; to build capacity in public health departments; to train the next cadre of public health professionals and ensure that public health and environmental health practices are standard to the educations of medical students; and to provide resources for states and local governments to plan for complex, multi-faceted public health threats, like the impacts of climate change, and build more resilient communities.

So Hillary Clinton understood Donald Trump was corrupt and, as Bill Maher would go on to describe him, whiny little bitch. She probably knew, too, that if Trump were elected President, he would reduce funding for the Centers for Disease Control and "dismantle a National Security Council directorate at the White House charged with preparing for" a likely pandemic.  When asked in March, 2021 about shutting down the global health unit, the President replied "this is something that you can never really think is going to happen."

Well, he may have thought it wouldn't happen. A President Hillary Clinton thought otherwise and would have been in a position to halt the spread of Covid-19, saving  perhaps hundreds of thousands of lives. 

But there was the matter of that one email on her server which was marked in the middle of a paragraph with a lower-case "c" which, then- FBI Director James Comey admitted, would not have been recognized by even classification experts. One e-mail sort of marked classified and sort of mishandled vs. tens, perhaps, hundreds of thousands of American lives. 

Hillary Clinton wasn't right about everything. But about health care, and especially, Donald Trump, she was.
