Of Primary Importance

As I commented in my last post, "seems nice".

This is getting serious. Lunatic Laura Loomer (couldn't resist the alliteration), influencer and unofficial advisor to President Donald Trump, tweets

Muslim streamer Hasan Piker @hasanthehun, who was caught on camera sleeping in First class on an airplane yesterday while wearing pro-socialism clothing with his assistant, has openly called for capitalists to be murdered:

“Yeah kill them! KiII those motherfuckers and murder those motherfuckers in the streets. Let the streets soak in their fucking red capitalist blood, dude.”

Why are Democrats campaigning with this violent, Muslim lunatic?

It's more serious when a website "managed by the Republican National Committee" makes a serious, albeit hyperbolic accusation:

This is a shot across the bow  "This is the Democrat Party" is an effort to smear all Democrats with the (figurative) odor of Hasan Piker. And quite an (figurative) odor it is.

Only three Democrats- California Representative Ro Khanna, California governoe Gavin Newsom, and former Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel- have agreed to go on a Piker livestream if invited. Khanna already has participated in a rally with with Piker; Emanuel presumably would spar with him. Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have had a friendly chat/interview with Piker, and Sanders has rallied for him.

Nonetheless, Piker has campaigned, thus far, for only two Democratic candidates, US Representative Summer Lee of Pennsylvania and Abdul-el Sayed, running for the nomination for US Senate from Michigan. El-Sayed faces two opponents, Represenative Haley Stevens and state legislator Mallory McMorrow, in the race to succeed retiring senator and Democrat Gary Peters. According to one recent survey, they both are polling ahead of him for the August 4 primary.

Stevens and Michigan senator Elissa Slotkin have criticized Piker for anti-Semitic comments he has made, and senators Elissa Slotkin if Michigan, Cory Booker (NJ), and Ruben Gallego (AZ) have stated they would not go on a podcast with him. That may or may not be a wise or virtuous decision, but at least suggests that some Democrats (also including Representative Brad Schneider of Illinois) steadfastly oppose bigotry whether from a Christian, Jew, or Muslim.

Moreprominent Democrats should denounce- explicitly- the "America deserved 9/11" guy.  More important, though, is that Democrats unite to defeat el-Sayed in Michigan, perhaps by uniting behind one of his two, legitimate, opponents. A victory by el-Sayed would be a boon for the popularity and influence of Piker.

If Abdul-el Sayed wins the Senate primary in Michigan, it puts Democrats in a bind. They cannot oppose him in the general election, and probably not even remain neutral. Control of the US Senate is critical. But if he wins the primary, the Democratic Party generally will be denounced as anti-Jewish or as racist.

It would be reminiscent of GOP anti- transexual attacks, in which Democrats have been branded as the guys who want boys in girls' bathrooms and on on girls' soccer teams. In this case, however, it would not be a price to pay for general support of the LGBTQIA community but of a profane, anti-American, anti-Asian, and anti-Jewish podcaster.
